(01/02/2006) EVS BROADCAST EQUIPMENT : EVS Digital TV Production Platform at the Centre

Torino (Italy), February 1, 2006 - Again this year, EVS Broadcast Equipment S.A. (ISIN BE0003820371, Bloomberg EVS BB, Reuters EVSB.BR), will supply numerous solutions, engineering consultants and support engineers to the co-ordination company, TOBO (Turin Olympic Broadcasting Organisation), as well as to the 80 on-site TV broadcasters, who own the broadcast rights to the event. More than 200 XT and XT[2] systems as well as numerous other applications including X-File[2] digital archive, CleanEdit, MediaXchange and the brand new IP Director Suite application will be used to ensure the production of 900 hours of live or near-live programmes to be broadcast to more than 500 million viewers worldwide. EVS systems will be used both for production at the 15 event sites and at the heart of the IBC (International Broadcast Centre) for the centralised production in Turin. More than 40 OB-vans (Outside Broadcast) supplied by RAI, France Television, Alfacam, SBP, Visions, Outside Broadcast or Prisma will ensure the live recording of all the events in High Definition (HDTV). Around 100 production and broadcast HD XT or HD XT[2] servers will be used by more than 150 experienced operators. The HDTV signal will be retransmitted in the US by NBC and in Japan by NHK. As for other countries, mainly European, the images will be compressed into the usual Standard Definition (SD) format. At the nerve centre of TV production in Turin, TOBO, as the host broadcaster, will be in charge of ensuring continuous production as well as the distribution and transmission of the international signal. The central server supplied by EVS to TOBO will enable the record of more than 14 continuous video sources in parallel. These streams will be converted into thousands of Standard Definition video clips and will be made available in real time to some 1,500 operators, editors, producers and journalists working in the IBC. In fact, when used in association with the new generation XT[2] servers and its high performance XNet[2] network, IP Director will enable TOBO to have real-time access to the multitude of video content on any available server. It will offer a complete suite of tools for logging, content management and highlights editing. Acting as a centralised content storage facility IP Director provides for considerable improvements in terms of the quality and speed of production as well as content access. NBC, the largest TV broadcaster present at the event with more than 2,000 on-site staff, will once again rely upon EVS technologies and consultants. NBC alone represents 75% of the US$ 833 million in turnover from the event TV rights sales. Roughly 50 dedicated operators will be using the 50 HD XT[2] servers and their applications to record, edit and broadcast the programmes either live or post produced for the broadcasters contracted to NBC, namely: NBC, USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Telemundo and also www.nbcolympics.com . BBC Interactive, for example, will be using Airbox-XT, X-File[2], CleanEdit and MediaXchange solutions to broadcast content on the Internet or to transfer some sequences to Apple's Final Cut Pro editing platform. German broadcasters ARD and ZDF will use EVS systems to broadcast the whole of the Games and magazine shows on the two specialised digital channels dedicated to the event. The teams from NHK (Japan), CBC (Canada), France Television (France) and many other broadcasters will take advantage of EVS digital products and solutions. This global event represents one further step in the progressive transition of the means of production towards the format of the future (at least for Europe): High Definition TV. The partnerships between EVS and its clients during these Games, particularly with TOBO and NBC, are a good opportunity to demonstrate the technologies, which EVS aims to install in all TV stations for any kind of sports events coverage over the course of the next few years.
